"Birthday is the most legitimate excuse to eat your heart out"
Hello hello!
Did exactly what the quote said cause the only thing I did to celebrate officially getting older is indulging in the sea of fine food. A happy tummy makes a happy Stephy~ Had so much good food over the Malaysia Day holiday I suddenly feel so happy to be alive wtf!
Anyway, gonna do a little blog post about the restaurant that escalated to the top of my favorite restaurant list because I had my birthday dinner there and OMG THE FOOD THERE IS SO DELICIOUS, SCRUMPTIOUS, MOUTH-WATERING AND *insert adjectives used to describe good food here*!
Please refer to the post title if you're wondering what restaurant I'm talking about haha!
Yeap it's the new hip place in town, Skillet At 163.
I was pretty puzzled with why 163 until I arrive at 163 Fraser Place and found out it's literally referring to the location the restaurant is at! LOL. It's right opposite KL Live Center and just 2 turns away from KLCC. Super easy to find. Parking in Fraser Place is quite decent with RM 10 flat rate after 6pm. For parking in KL, I think it's pretty okay! Haha
The restaurant didn't have that usual uptight fine dining restaurant ambiance which I honestly think is a bit stressful to eat in places like that hahhaa. Cause I SPILL EVERYTHING! It felt like a hipster cafe but they serve fine dining so I guess it's a casual fine dining restaurant (yeap it means you can eat atas food in your Bermuda pants or flip flops lol).
The modern edgy interior
Lots of working class coming down for a happy hour after work
So hipster
I really love how friendly was the staff there. I presumed some of them are the owners of the place. They really went from table to table recommending dish by dish and did their very best to make the customers feel at home. We were given three different menus for drinks, food and desserts separately. I feel so old for saying this but hello minimalistic menu with huge fonts! Hahahah
Main menu (blurred cause I was too pai seh to take pic when the waitress is looking haha)
Dessert! With their pairings suggestions
Before our food is served, we were offered testing samples for their upcoming menus!
Mini version
This is soooooo worth looking forward to! The saltiness of the toppings and the fluffy bread at the bottom matches perfectly with each other! Guess I'll hop right over once the switch their menus lol. I only remember caviar was in it because there's so many things in that small bite my brain couldn't catch up! Fail blogger who only remembers taste but not names LOL
And some warm bread as appetizer. Emphasizing on WARM cause some places serve cold bread that can be used as a bullet to shoot people wtf!
Now.... *trumpet fanfare*
OUR ORDERS FOR THE NIGHT
For drinks, we ordered the Margarita cocktail!
Okay judge me all you want cause I forgot the full name of the cocktail AND did not take pictures of the drinks menu! Erm.. I mentioned it's my birthday right? This new aging thing is so real! lol
The drink was quite good but I would recommend everyone to start taking sips the moment it is served. Lol. The ice will melt quite fast and it'll overflow the cup so you either drink it fast or request for a bigger cup lol
For the mains, we had..
Chicken Mille-Feuille
The is one of the highly recommended dish. This is so good that when it came, I just instantly stopped talking. I just wanted to enjoy my food. It's like the dish has an unknown attraction that draws all my senses to focus on the taste.
The elements are honestly very basic Malaysian food. Otak-otak, popiah skin and percik sauce but there is a certain magical power that made the ordinary food so delicious when eaten together. The texture and the taste is still making me salivate at this very moment when I'm blogging about it. And I feel like some dumbass for blogging about food at 12am.. I never really learn my lessons wtf!
Next up, the..
Signature Asian Aglio Olio
I have a certain affinity towards aglio olio so I'll usually order it whenever I saw it on the menu.
Hello hello huge and fresh prawns with the noodles. To make the dish "Asian", they added curry leaves and dry shrimps into the otherwise normal aglio olio. I really must emphasis how food appeals to different people because I didn't like how overpowering the dry shrimp taste was but my bf loved it so much, this time, he is the one not talking but was devouring his food haha.
It's really NOT like the usual aglio olio. I was expecting the usual olive oil and dry chili but this was totally modified to the Skillet At 163 style. Not to say it's not good though. I just had an expectation versus reality moment haha. If you love dry shrimp, by all means please order this. The noodle was perfectly cooked, the prawns were fresh and the fragrant is all there.
Finally, time to introduce the dessert!!!
Jeng jeng jeng jeng!
Ordered the Liquid Nitrogen Sorbet! This was a fun dessert. The chef will do a live demonstration of how the sorbet is made so he'll bring out all the tools including literally a buck load of liquid nitrogen.
The flavors available vary season to season. When I went, they were serving:
- Watermelon and Lychee
- Mango and Passion Fruit
- Mixberries
I went for the most *ahem* boring one i.e. Mango and Passion Fruit! Haha. IT IS VERY HARD TO RESISTS WHEN THEY PUT TWO OF YOUR FAVORITE FRUITS TOGETHER!
Anyway, they really do prioritize their customers' request over everything else because initially they added lime into the mixture so it wouldn't be too sweet but I made a very disgusted face cause I really hate lime hahahah reminds me of dishwash.. Classic Mojito is like a nightmare to me thanks to the lime taste. Surprisingly, the chef really replaced the entire mixture for me! Usually, my request would be rejected cause they have their "standards" and what not.. So I'm super satisfied with how they respected my request!! Such professionalism *wild applause*
He also explained to us how cold is the liquid nitrogen.
I was warned to not touch it but no one say I can't play with the cold air right? Hehe
The chef dude then added in the liquid nitrogen into the mixture and whipped it fast so that the sorbet can be formed. Of course, he gave us some commentary along the way so it wouldn't be all awkward silence. About 5 minutes later, voila the sorbet is ready to be served!
Charming chef right there
Pour and stir, pour and stir~
The end result was a BURST of icy cold mango and passion fruit in my mouth! To be honest, it was like any normal sorbet just that it is served fresh right in front of you. Is the taste worth RM 45? Not really... but the experience? Definitely! Next time, I am definitely eyeing on the Texture of Chocolate muahaha
Overall, the place is like a little slice of heaven on earth! The food is good, the environment is good and the staff are so professional and friendly. This place is really just addictive! I couldn't believe it when they say the restaurant is only 5 months old! I think it'll be like some giant in Malaysia in 5 years time!
Highly recommended and I will definitely be back for more!
Well that's all I have today so stay tune for next week's post (if I'm not lazy teehee)
