Yamagoya Ramen

For now, HK stuff will be put on the back burner to make way for another..


Today's star is Yamagoya Ramen in Publika. If you google the best ramen in Kuala Lumpur, most food reviews will direct you to Ippudo Ramen in Pavilion or Yamagoya Ramen in Publika!

I was actually driven by boredom and laziness to decide what to eat that day. I just wanted to go somewhere nearby to have a quick dinner and go home. Publika was one of the closest options I had. Plus I've always wanted to try Yamagoya so it's as if I was destined to go there (okay maybe a little less dramatic la).

Upon reaching Publika, I was disappointed when I couldn't find Yamagoya Ramen on the directory.  I was thinking to myself, takkan (unlikely) the shop closed down right? Luckily the lady at the concierge guided me. It's located at the same row as Subway. Just a few shops down the block. Just in case you guys can't find the place!

At first I was expecting crazy long line because the shop is quite popular among bloggers and food lovers.  But no! To my surprise, the shop was half empty. But I was there quite early though.






And I noticed a huge machine on the left side of the shop. Wonder what it is for?

There's quite a variety of ramen on the menu but I was quite indecisive so I ordered the ramen with a thumbs up next to it, the classic ramen (not cha shu ramen by the way). I also ordered tonkatsu because I was craving for it but One Utama was too far for Tonkatsu by Ma Maison.

The ramen was served after 10 minutes waiting time. It was pretty quick if you ask me. And woahhh! My first look at the ramen made my stomach growl (luckily no one heard). And the fragrant smell made me salivate instantly!

After my first bite, I found the ramen to not only look good, but taste as good as it looks. I had read some bad reviews about the ramen, so I wasn't expecting much. But the ramen is beyond satisfactory. I have not had ramen this yummy before (best ramen in KL?! Never been to Japan, so I wouldn't know how it compares). The flavouring is just right. It is not tasteless until you cannot taste the soup, but it is not too heavily seasoned until you need to wash your mouth with gallons of water. It's just nice.

The ramen is very smooth as well. I felt like the noodles are just begging to get into my mouth! The noodle also was not overcooked and soggy. Some people may find it slightly harder than the supermarket variety though. Again, it's preference.

Oh remember that weird machine I mentioned? It's used to make the ramen FRESH! Every MORNING! Must go in the morning next time to catch a glimpse of the ramen making process.

The pork was good too! The ratio of the fat and meat part is perfect. So much so that it melts in your mouth! I had to control myself not to finish the meat in 5 seconds so I can enjoy it bit by bit!

Oops! I almost forgot about the tonkatsu. And I can 100% justify why I forgot about it. Cause it sucks! Perhaps because I compared to Tonkatsu by Ma Maison. Kind of like how people say that once you tried Swiss chocolate won't like to eat local chocolate anymore.

The tonkatsu was quite thin and the salad wasn't as crispy. The salad was dressed with a sour-ish kind of sauce so it can be appetizing. But it ruined the salad for me. The condiments for the tonkatsu is just alright. To be fair, if I haven't tried Tonkatsu by Ma Maison, then this dish is still alright. But for my next visit I'll probably not order this again. Halfway through,  I regretted why I didn't order two bowls of ramen instead.

For drinks, I had the standard cold green tea and a cold barley tea. I preferred the barley tea cause it wash out the really stuff feeling from all the food. Very refreshing.

There's no doubt that I'll come back for more... RAMEN! It's definitely the best in KL!
